Comedian and actor Kapil Sharma's newly opened eatery, Kap's Cafe, in Surrey, British Columbia, was reportedly targeted in a shooting incident on Wednesday night, with at least nine shots fired at the establishment. While no injuries have been reported, the attack has been claimed by Harjeet Singh Laddi, an alleged operative of the banned Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and one of India's most wanted men by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Purported videos circulating on social media, dated July 9, show a man firing a pistol multiple times from inside a vehicle at the cafe. Bullet marks were found on the cafe's facade as well as on nearby residential buildings, according to Surrey police. The area was sealed off, CCTV footage is being scanned, and spent bullet casings have been recovered as part of a forensic investigation.
Kap's Cafe, a venture in which Kapil Sharma's wife Ginni Chatrath is also involved, marked the comedian's debut in the restaurant industry and had only recently opened its doors, quickly becoming a popular spot for the Indian community in Surrey. Laddi reportedly stated that the attack was carried out in anger over remarks allegedly made by Kapil Sharma. Authorities are currently investigating whether the firing was an act of personal intimidation or part of a broader pattern of threats linked to pro-Khalistan extremists operating abroad. No arrests have been made so far, with police pursuing all leads to identify and locate the attackers.
